Wooden Benches
Winter 2022

200 YEARS OLD TIMES 2: "Wooden Benches" began with a digital scan of a hand-carved wooden driftwood bench from Doner's studio. This was then digitally placed into a scanned 200 year-old tulip poplar log and then CNC milled to produce two identical replicas.

About

Milling to exacting standards

Michele Oka Doner, a celebrated artist and writer with a career spanning five decades, draws inspiration from her profound reverence for the natural world. Her artistic language is rooted in her lifelong study of the organic world.

Since the 1980s, Michele Oka Doner has collaborated with Johnson Atelier. Recently, she crafted two stunning benches using Tulip Poplar logs sourced from the Chicago Botanical Gardens, which were felled in 1910. After meticulously hand-carving a prototype, the logs were milled and hand-sanded to create a finish that accentuates the wood's natural beauty.
